AUTOMATED WATER EXTRACTION

Semi-volatile liquid-liquid extractions performed effortlessly, unattended overnight - minimizing solvent, labor and cost of operation.

A simple, green and emulsion-free technique conducted directly in the sample bottles as received.

BLLE (“billie”) is in use in federal, state and commercial laboratories in the US.  Most similar to continuous liquid-liquid extraction (CLLE) in scope and extraction efficiency but much simpler. No heating mantels, chillers or expensive glassware required.

ACKNOWLEDGED BY THE UNITED STATES ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION AGENCY (USEPA) AS AN EXTENSION OF THE SEPARATORY FUNNEL AND NAMED SPECIFICALLY “TO FALL UNDER THE FLEXIBILITY TO MODIFY METHODS ALLOWED AT 40 CFR § 136.6.”

REDUCE  - Labor, solvent use, glassware cost and cleaning/handling, labeling , extract concentration time, and contamination

ELIMINATEEmulsions, human error, mechanical failure and holding time concerns

IMPROVE  - Quality, precision, safety, laboratory capacity and profitability

(Please review the 'REFERENCE PAPERS' and 'PRODEDURES' pages if you are not familiar with this technique)

BLLE is an economical, automated technique that assures efficient, compliant, high quality water extractions. Solids content of 5% or more is tolerated and failures due to emulsions or human error are eliminated.  Significant savings of labor and solvent are realized.  All labs using the technique have been able to validate BLLE with IDOC and MDL studies shown equal to or superior to those generated using separatory funnel or continuous liquid-liquid extraction. Results to be expected as well as the stellar extraction character may be found in the ‘Results” and “Reference Papers” pages of this website.

More than a decade of research has refined the techniques highlighted in the PROCEDURES section of this website.  Although it is possible that the BLLE technique may be improved, excellent results are obtained if these procedures are followed explicitly. Bottle rotisserie and solvent discharging devices developed for BLLE (pictured below) are provided as a service.  Information to obtain these devices may be found on the 'EQUIPMENT' page of this site or by contacting us directly.  Please feel free to contact us for additional information.  You may order this equipment by telephone (330-310-2150) or email (bllescientific@att.net).  POs will be honored from established laboratories. Paypal is accepted.  This  equipment may be returned for full refund if not completely satisfied with the equipment or the BLLE procedure itself.  A risk free 90 day trial period is thus extended to any laboratory  wishing to examine this technique.  A single rotisserie, inversion chair and funnelcock would be sufficient for a part-time technician to extract up to 35, 1-liter sized samples per day.
